Facilitation is an art, a science, and fundamental to how we build teams, movements, and power.


We created this training for seasoned organizers and movement builders in mind. How do you design productive agendas, move thru conflict, stand in your own power? Facilitation for Movement is a 2- day intensive training to boost your skills and confidence as a facilitator and movement builder.

In this current moment when more people are being energized by our movements for social change there are more organizations, projects, ideas and movements that are calling on the expertise of facilitators to help support their vision. Facilitation for Movement Training intends to  provide a space for advance training for facilitators and space holders who are involved with the following type of work: Strategy planning, coalition, movement and network building, program and project specific facilitation, organizational culture, conflict resolution and organizational development.

Some of the overarching goals for this training are for participants to be able to sharpen their ability to:

  • Design agendas that help achieve desired outcomes

  • Hold the process that allow organizations and movement building formations to move from idea- vision- strategy

  • Support in the creation of accountability mechanisms that ensure what is developed in the meeting can be actionable

  • Cultivate your individual presence as a facilitators in particular how to understand the utility of conflict in advancing process, calm under fire, etc 

Facilitation for Movement Trainers


Black Feminist Future is thrilled to have expert trainers, movement leaders, and coaches, Inca Mohammed and Makani Themba, as our trainers. They each bring unique insight, perspectives, style, and decades of experience to the art of facilitation and will impart their brilliance and skills with participants.



Makani Themba is Chief Strategist at Higher Ground Change Strategies based in Detroit, Michigan.  A social justice innovator and pioneer in the field of change communications and narrative strategy, she has spent more than 20 years supporting organizations, coalitions and philanthropic institutions in developing high impact change initiatives.  Higher Ground Change Strategies is her newest project, which she describes as “a place where change makers can get the support they need to take their work to the next level.” Higher Ground helps partners integrate authentic engagement, systems analysis, change communications and more for powerful, vision-based change.

Previously, Makani served as the founder and executive director of The Praxis Project, a nonprofit organization helping communities use media and policy advocacy to advance health justice.  Under her leadership, The Praxis Project raised more than $20 million for advocacy organizations working in communities of color and provided training and technical assistance to hundreds of organization and public agencies nationwide.  These initiatives include Communities Creating Healthy Environments (C-CHE), an initiative of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation to support policy advocacy to advance healthy food outlets and safe places to play in communities of color and Building Capacity Building Power, a partnership with Ford Foundation to support grassroots civic engagement and Policy Advocacy on Tobacco and Health (PATH)

Makani is a highly sought-after public speaker, capacity builder, and ethnographer.  Her publications have helped set the standard for policy advocacy work and contributed significantly to the field of public health’s current emphasis on media and policy advocacy to address root causes of health problems.


Internationally recognized for her group facilitation and training skills, Inca A. Mohamed has many years of experience managing and working with nonprofit organizations addressing youth development, sexual and reproductive health and rights, gender equity, and equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI).  Inca has helped hundreds of organizations create effective management and powerful strategies for change.

As the Management Assistance Group’s (MAG) Executive Director, Inca spearheaded MAG's initiative to go beyond one-on-one consulting with single organizations to providing leadership coaching as a stand-alone service, facilitating high-stakes meetings, and working with coalitions and other multi-organization groups. Inca’s approach to consulting is rooted in her experience as a Caribbean immigrant from a multi-ethnic family, "I had to develop 'border-crossing' skills to survive and thrive, and I know the power of cross-cultural learning. My experience taught me to listen deeply, honor what is distinct about each environment, and, when appropriate, translate experiences from one place to another." Inca’s EDI work is informed by the understanding that an organization’s willingness and commitment to consistently and systematically address these issues of diversity, equity and inclusion are fundamental to its health and its capacity for sustained impact.

Before joining MAG, Inca was a Program Officer for human development and reproductive health at the Ford Foundation where she oversaw a $60 million dollar portfolio aimed at strengthening youth development domestically and abroad. She stays connected to the philanthropic sector through her work as a consulting philanthropic advisor to Rockefeller Philanthropy Advisors.  Her career has also included work in public education and advocacy, training, program design and management as well as individual coaching. She has held leadership positions at a diverse range of organizations, including the YWCA of the USA, Hawaii Department of Health, The Door (comprehensive youth development center) and Alameda-San Francisco Planned Parenthood in San Francisco.
