In this political and cultural moment, it feels both important and imperative to create intentional space for Black women to build vision and movement that centers our lives. With this as our guiding mandate, Black Feminist Future is excited to launch our first initiative, The Black Feminist Future Visioning Salon.
For many Black women the 2016 Election cycle, like the those before, has many experiencing a range of emotions. Ambivalence. Disgust, Outrage. Rendered Invisible. The presidential race in particular is a chilling reminder of how race, class, gender, and sexuality are discussed as compartmentalized identities with talking points and policy platforms that address racism(Black men), class(middle class White), gender(cis White woman), and sexuality(White gay men). Those of us who have the lived experience of being a Black woman or girl know that our very existence, our interests, and our activism defies single identities, issues, movements, and/or candidates.
We know that Black women are counted on to be the margin of victory for elections, vanguards of people’s movement past and present, yet our unique issues, concerns, even are rarely if ever mentioned by those seeking political office or their agendas. While we continue to be loyal to the political process and political parties, the democratic process has yet to work for Black women and girls.
In the midst of this landscape, Black Feminist Future is excited to create intentional space for Black women to collectively engage, craft vision, and delve into the possibilities of galvanizing the political power of Black women and girls for the 21st century. This year the theme of our Visioning Salons is Freedom Dreams: Black Feminist Visioning Our Political Future; a space of reimagining the political landscape; one that centers dignity, leadership, and vision of Black women and girls.
From engaging in conversations about our current political moment, national and local races, what democracy means to us, exciting possibilities, we will also participate in the co creation of a National Black Feminist Agenda that will amplify local campaigns and issues to provide organizations, leaders, activists, movements, and elected officials with concrete ways to advance Black feminists freedom dreams on the local, state, and national level. The Black Feminist Future Visioning Salon desires to create intentional space for Black women to collectively engage, craft vision, and delve into the possibilities of galvanizing the social and political power of Black women and girls for the 21st century. At local sites across the country, we invited Black women- cultural workers, organizers, students, community members, parents, you, everyone- to share their knowledge, passion, and hopes for a world where Black women and girls are affirmed and treated as inherently valuable and to help shape the vision, strategy, and focus of this initiative’s work.
